It never fails, the first thing anyone ever notices about Mr. Darren Liten are his eyes. A bright, clear emerald green, they truly stand out in a face that you'd expect to be sporting a set of brown eyes. He has the right skin tone for brown eyes, with dark brown hair that grows to various states of shagginess before he crops it back down to something he considers 'manageable'. He actually grew it fairly long once when he was younger and still in school, but that didn't last terribly long and he hasn't done it since. He also had it colored ONCE at around the same time, a vivid pink on a dare that he refused to chicken out on. He doubts anyone really remembers it any longer, but it wouldn't honestly surprise him, all things considered. He was the kind of guy in school that everyone SAW, but most people didn't KNOW, and the pink really only made people see him more. It was hilarious, he thought. Dare or not, he took it like a champ, and essentially taught everyone else that he could be a good sport about such things. That's followed him to this day.
It didn't hurt his visibility in school that he was on the Quidditch and Dueling teams, both being sports that involved action and aggression. He was always in good physical condition, but he truly matured into a strong physique after graduating. He stands just barely above six feet, with an athletic build that doesn't do anything to make people believe that he's a slacker of any sort, though it's not enough to make him stand out in a crowd, or anything. In fact, that's one of the things he tries NOT to do on a regular basis.
In his line of work, especially with the additional training he got from his cousin, it was always stressed that blending in with a crowd is extremely important. He can't do his job if he's flashy and obvious about his position, unless that was the plan from the start. He's been known to adopt different styles, mannerisms and body language so that he can blend in with a crowd better.
Because of the job, his wardrobe is pretty broad and he has a surprising variety of skills to go with it. He's learned plenty of things only for the sake of blending in with certain groups, and he most certainly has no intention of letting any friends go through his closet. Besides the fact that he occasionally has dangerous things in his home (hello, AUROR), he also doesn't want to even try explaining away certain things. Such revelations would be even more shocking should they come to pass simply because of his usual appearance. He's nearly always found in practical, comfortable clothing, suited to whatever he's working on. Usually, he gravitates towards jeans, boots, whatever shirt he feels like and a jacket if it's necessary, but he really IS all about function. If military-style BDUs are best suited to the environment he's in, that's what he'll go with. He cares more about surviving than looking good doing it, which is also why he has a habit of neglecting to shave until he really needs to. That, and he figures that if it's the only thing he's truly lazy about, everyone can just deal with it.
As surprising as his ever-changing wardrobe (or perhaps more surprising) is the fact that Darren is an Animagus. He's registered, so it's not impossible to find out, but how many people go looking? He's a large melanistic leopard, which surprised everyone who knew him, in a way. In the wild, melanistic leopards are extremely uncommon, black panthers usually being jaguars, but as soon as Darren accomplished the magic involved, he had to figure it out for sure. Definitely a leopard. He figures it has nothing to do with rarity and everything to do with his own coloring, since his hair is so dark and the cat form has his green eyes instead of gold or amber, but there's no way to tell for sure what the reason was. Whatever the case, he's very pleased with it. |
| Personality |
Darren is one of those people that is completely capable of being whoever it is he has to be for a given situation, trained well by his cousin and put to the test on a regular basis by the demands of his job. He's a social chameleon, but somehow still manages to come across as being genuine. The reason the shifts in personality WORK for him is because he really does devote so much of himself to the task at hand. Still, make no mistake in thinking that it's anything other than a task to him. He does it for the job, and he CAN maintain it, but once the job is finished, that's it. Certain things may linger for a little while, but he'll drop the act immediately.
Once you understand that meeting him on the job may not necessarily give you anything accurate about who you're dealing with, it's a lot easier to determine what he's really like. As long as he's not dealing with an undercover kind of situation, what you see is what you get (though he understates certain qualities about himself on purpose). Darren is a surprisingly honest person for being someone that has to consider his surroundings for survival so often. Perhaps it's that fact that makes him so 'real', knowing that it could all be over in a second. He doesn't want to waste that valuable time pretending when he doesn't have to be. For his job, it's one thing, but if he has to do it in his personal time, it's not worth it to him, and he'll put that right out there. He's a friendly guy, but he's not about to hold all that much back. Generally, the only time he'll mince words are when he really cares about the feelings involved, or when he's pretty sure that it'll get him fired if he opens his mouth. The filter between his brain and his mouth is pretty good, when he chooses to use it. Otherwise, he relies on intelligence to make up for the lack of proper filtration and save him from making stupid observations. It works often enough that people tend to realize he's not an idiot, but he isn't usually pegged for being a genius. He's an auror, so he couldn't possibly be stupid, but he's been mistaken for 'muscle' in the past. That always cracks him up because he's not a huge dude, but he truly doesn't let on exactly how smart he is. It's one of those things that is understated about him, much like a lot of his better qualities.
While he doesn't exactly put any conscious thought into it, he's actually a pretty modest dude. HE knows what he's good at, but it might take a little pushing to get him to admit that he's more than mediocre at something. He's much better at proving it and just letting his abilities speak for themselves, which usually does better than any bragging on his part would manage. Besides, being underestimated isn't the worst thing in the world, though it took him a few years to understand that. His ego, once much more impressive, has been beaten into submission through hard training and even harder conditions, not to mention a ridiculous string of successes and losses, sometimes intermingled. |
