| History |
Ernest Quarme is the only son of Robert and Denisa Quarme, who are shopkeepers in Godric's Hollow, where they own a carpet store specializing in all forms of magical carpets, rugs, and doormats. It's a family business that goes back to the 18th centuries when Lewisham Youngston Quarme established a weaving shop in the town to supply drapers and carpet-makers with wool, cotton, and muslin. They also did special order carpets that could provide a variety of functions: Their self-cleaning carpets were highly popular, as were the intruder alert carpets. But most were simply nice, cozy carpets. The designs were rather dull and unimaginative for some years, until the Quarmes son, Jacob, married an gypsy of questionable virtue, but great magical ability. She inspired the Quarme family to expand into exotic designs of rugs and carpets, and even certain kinds using animal skins. This enhanced their business greatly because they could demand much higher prices for the rugs than simple woven bolts of cloth. The Quarmes one big claim to fame came when Jacob Quarme, the son of Lewisham Quarme, sold a rug to a Turkish Magical Ambassador and it promptly smothered him. Naturally, the bad press that came from a Turkish Ambassador being smothered, and by a carpet of custom Turkish designs, was a severe setback for the fortunes of the family. They managed to survive this setback because Jacob had secured a contract to supply rugs to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry; a contract which continues to this day. Hogwarts students have been walking all over the Quarme's creations ever since. However. Danizetta, Jacob's wife, ran off after he spent some time in jail for the terrible accident (although it was rumored that Danizetta had an affair with the Turk-- later disproven) Jacob's children continued the business as best they could, producing solid if relatively undistinguished carpets. By the time Ernest was born 24 years ago, the family had sunk decidedly to a rather poor family. His family had served the Order of the Phoenix pretty well, supplying clothing and tenting supplies to its field operatives during the Second Wizard War. But ill luck seemed to follow the family. Quarme Carpets attempted to expand to Diagon Alley right before Voldemort's rise, and the business promptly failed and never re-opened Ernest however, seemed to be the bright star of the family, and was able to do simple transfigurations at a young age. He spent his formative years fixated on trying to spin ordinary wool into gold, but failed every time. He received his letter from Hogwarts, and was sorted into Gryffindor. Ernest (don't call me Ernie) went by the name of Quarme, as in 'hey, Quarme, or hey, Lucky' most of the time, because of his spectacularly poor academic record. Although intelligent, he just was more of a dreamer than anything else. He was good at Transfiguration, but only managed to earn Average grades in the major subjects of magic, and dropped class after class of more difficult subjects. He graduated in a solid third from the bottom of the entire class of 2023; and 67th in Gryffindor. He returned to help run the family business with his father and mother, and five sisters, since he had no other good options. Since school, he's tried a few different careers, but none suited him: He was a Magical Creatures guard; an owl-keeper for the Magical Post; a quill-maker; and a bartender. However, he was always broke after a few months. At present, he is taking correspondence courses in reading tarot cards, and hopes to become a great Seer. However, it's a pipe dream, since his grade in Divination was a solid P; and he dropped the course. He decided that he had to change his luck somehow, which is why he took up the card readings. He met a few pretty girls that way, but at present, he's not married or dating anyone.
Current professions: r; owl-keeper, are just a few of the jobs that Ernest has held. The postal job was probably the longest in tenure, but he managed to foul up even the owl-post once too often. At present, he's basically a shopkeeper in Godric's Hollow, and writes columns for The Quibbler about various magical topics that he knows nothing about. However, he's actually gotten fan mail back, and Ernest is starting to believe in this minor celebrity status. Maybe journalism....hmmmmm. |
| Looks |
Ernest "Lucky" Quarme is 5'8" tall, with straggly brown hair, and a thin face. He looks mournful, but has a dazzling smile when he's truly happy or pleased. He's not un-handsome, just uncharismatic. |
| Personality |
Failure to Quarme is just another way of learning what he's really supposed to be doing. Whether that was a job, magic, or who he was dating at the time. He's actually very positive and upbeat inside, and he's tough. He doesn't let insults get to him. He's got a bit of a temper now and again, because you can't be a failure all the time, and not burst sometime. He was briefly engaged to a girl who called him 'the most boring person on Earth' before she left, so he's been trying to get out more, and do less boring activities. He has managed to attract a certain circle of like-minded friends that spent a lot of time at Hogwarts playing Exploding Snap and not studying. He's been told that he's intelligent, and has great potential by his teachers, but he doesn't have a single friend -- except one -- who has tried to set an example. Hugh Kenrick was always a friend to Ernest in school, and tried to help him with his magical studies. At heart, he's a loyal and trustworthy person; kind to animals (at least the owls didn't die); and has good manners. He dresses rather casually, but cleans up well when required, or if he somehow manages to convince a girl to go on a date with him. |
